Easy Up, Easy Down – Non-Woven Wallpaper

Non-Woven Wallpaper is a perfect wallcovering choice for the DIY homeowner. Non-woven material is a mix of synthetic and natural fibers that allows the paper to remain dimensionally stable when wet. Unlike traditional wallpapers that need to be pasted and booked before hanging, non-wovens can be installed using the paste-the-wall method. Simply apply paste to the wall, hang, and trim. There’s no need to set up a large, cumbersome pasting table.

Wall Prep

Before you tackle a non-woven installation, be sure your walls are properly prepared. Ensuring the wall surface is primed will help with the initial wallpaper installation as well as future removal. For latex painted walls, a primer like PRO-977 Ultra Prime is ideal. PRO-977 is a white, water-based wallpaper primer that dries to a hard, matte finish. This will create a durable surface that’s perfect for new wallpaper. The primer will also provide increased ‘slip’ to help with moving and positioning wallpaper during installation. When it’s time to redecorate, PRO-977 will allow wallpaper to be removed more easily and with less damage to walls.

Adhesive Selection

Choosing a suitable wallpaper adhesive will ensure your non-woven wallpaper installation goes smoothly. With non-woven wallcoverings, many manufacturer’s hanging instructions will recommend using either a heavy duty clear wallpaper paste or premixed vinyl adhesive. In most cases, PRO-880 Ultra Clear Strippable or PRO-543 Universal Wallpaper Adhesive will work well.

Both adhesives are easy to use, provide excellent tack, good slip for positioning, and clean up easily with water. However, if you need some extra help selecting an adhesive for your project don’t hesitate to contact us.

Installation

Ensure your walls are clean and free from dirt or grease that can affect adhesion. Take a moment to engineer the room and plan out the install. This will help you determine where to start your installation. When hanging, work your way around the room one section at a time. Paste applied too far in advance can dry out before you get a chance to hang your wallpaper. Be sure to check your manufacturer’s hanging instructions for specific installation information.

Installation Tips:

  • Use a 3/8-inch nap paint roller to ensure even coverage of the adhesive on the wall.
  • Apply extra adhesive in seams or corners that are difficult to smooth down.
  • Be sure to clean up excess paste while it’s still wet. Dried adhesive may take more effort to clean up.

Removal

Once installed and fully dry, non-woven wallpapers are designed to strip in full sheets. Wall damage can be minimized or eliminated by using a quality wallpaper primer such as PRO-977 Ultra Prime, and strippable adhesive like PRO-880 Ultra Clear during installation.
