ARMORFAUX Decorative Acrylic Coatings

FREQUENTLY ASK QUESTIONS | ARMORFAUX Products

Do I need primer?
Not usually as the ARMORFAUX base is self-priming over bare sheetrock, wood, plaster and previously painted surfaces. Some metals, glass, oil based and epoxy enamels do require specialty primers.

Can I put this over an existing texture?
Yes, you can roll, trowel or spray this over an existing texture and it will fill in some of the highs and lows and create a new texture. In some cases the previous texture will “telegraph” through. Always do a test patch and let dry completely as there is approx 50% shrinkage upon drying.

Can I paint over ARMORFAUX?
Yes, you can paint over this system with a coat of premium latex paint.

Can I sand it?
Yes, but it sands like all other acrylic coatings. If you are looking to eradicate the texture you are better off skimming.

How big of a sprayer is needed to spray on the base coat?
Any airless machine that will do a gallon a minute will work fine.  Take out the filters and use a .023 tip and set the pressure to 2800 PSI.

Can I trowel it on?
Yes, right out of a mud pan.

Water based?
Yes

How can I tint the base coat?
The base coat can be tinted at the paint store. It comes in both a tint base for light to medium colors and a deep tint base for dark colors.

Do I drill mix it?
Not recommended.

Can I thin it?
Not recommended.

How thick can I apply ARMORFAUX?
The best rule of thumb is if the product sags, it is too thick and it will crack upon drying.

What is the glaze open time?
If rolled on and then squeegeed off, it will give you about 10 minutes of real working time.  For most situations , we recommend adding ARMORFAUX Glaze Extender to the ARMORFAUX Glaze per label directions.  One quart of ARMORFAUX Extender added to a gallon of ARMORFAUX Glaze should give you up to 20 minutes open time.  One gallon of ARMORFAUX Extender added to a gallon of ARMORFAUX Glaze will give you up to 90 minutes open time.

Will the Extender affect the color?
Yes, it will make it more translucent.  Think of the Glaze extender as part of the glaze in your paint to glaze ratio.

What sheens are available?
ARMORFAUX Base Coat is matte.  ARMORFAUX Glaze & Varnish comes in matte (very flat) and high gloss sheens.

Will the glaze crackle?
If a crackle effect is desired, both the Base Coat and Glaze will crackle when used with most water-based crackle mediums.

Can I stop middle of a wall?
Not recommended.  If necessary, feather out your edges.

Can I use multiple colors?
Yes, but let the first coat dry thoroughly.

Do I apply the glaze heavy or light?
Apply ARMORFAUX Glaze & Varnish evenly with a 3/8" nap roller.  Tape off all ceilings and trim to allow for the glaze to be applied evenly into all corners and edges.
